Automation of CAD Generation of Turbine Rear Structure
Location
Delft, The Netherlands
Date
March 2022 - June 2022
Project type
Course Project / Internship
Role
Knowledge Based Engineering Intern
During my internship at GKN Aerospace, I developed a Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) application to automate the design of Turbine Rear Structures (TRS) for turbofan engines. The tool transformed geometric parameters into complete CAD models using Python and object-oriented programming in the ParaPy platform, incorporating engineering expertise to ensure design rule compliance and issue warnings for violations.
I created an intelligent system that reduced TRS design time from hours to minutes by automating repetitive tasks. The application generated ready-to-use STEP files for NX software and pre-meshed models for FEM analysis in ANSYS, enabling rapid design iterations that would be impractical with traditional CAD tools or basic programming languages.
This solution preserved corporate knowledge while eliminating costly manual simplifications and redesign risks. The efficiency gains allowed engineers to explore more design configurations within tight deadlines, significantly accelerating development cycles for critical engine components.
